IP Telephony: Beyond Quality of Service (QoS) and toll bypass
When IP convergence and Voice over IP (VoIP) first emerged as options for business-class communications, there was much discussion about the potential cost savings of toll bypass, and concern over quality of service (QoS).
Toll bypass cuts telco tolls by routing your long distance voice traffic from the originating location, over your wide area network (WAN) to your site location nearest the call destination, then switching the calls to the PSTN. In the past, migration to IP convergence could be justified on the basis of projected savings from toll bypass. But long distance call fees have steadily reduced, making it hard to justify a technology refresh on toll bypass alone.
Meanwhile, rapid technology enhancements - as well as greater experience from multiple deployments - have made the quality of voice services delivered over converged networks a concern of the past.
So how can you justify migration to a converged IP network? Why should you move from a traditional PABX with switched packet technology? And even if you do decide to run voice over your IP WAN, why should you also upgrade to IP Telephony?
IP Telephony is reliable, secure and - most importantly - offers a range of applications which can:
- Enhance staff productivity
- Improve workflows
- Enable telecommuting and remote access to enterprise resources
- Increase customer service levels
Simply, IP Telephony gives your business a competitive edge.
